Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti sworn in by President Vella

Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti took his oath of office in a low-key swearing-in ceremony at San Anton Palace in Attard.

He was appointed by the President of Malta, George Vella who acted on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Opposition.

Both the Government and the Opposition, today week, agreed on the nomination of Judge Mark Chetcuti as Chief Justice. 

His nomination was approved by the House of Representatives.

Judge Chetcuti has replaced Judge Joseph Azzopardi who has retired with age.

During the ceremony, President George Vella said that now it is the right time for a constitutional reform which reflects the reform of the judiciary appointment.

Prime Minister Robert Abela, Chief Justice Emeritus Joseph Azzopardi, State Advocate Victoria Buttigieg and Justice Minister were present for the swearing-in ceremony.
