The Electoral Commission will be receiving candidates’ nominations for a casual election to elect a member of parliament in the Eighth Electoral District following the resignation of former Economy Minister Chris Cardona.

The casual election will take place on Wednesday the 13th of May.

Eligible candidates who contested the Eighth Electoral District in June 2017 general election and who were not elected may present their nomination as from Wednesday 6th till Saturday 9th of May and Monday 11th May 2020, at the Electoral Commission’s Office.

Former minister Chris Cardona resigned from his seat in Parliament on the 30th of April, though he will continue to serve as the Labour Party’s deputy leader for party affairs.

Cardona served as Economy Minister in Joseph Muscat’s Cabinet but was left in the backbench by Robert Abela. The Birkirkara lawyer was first elected to Parliament in 1996 and has always been confirmed to his seat since.
