The Electoral Commission has announced that a casual election will be held to elect a member of parliament from the second electoral district following the resignation of disgraced former prime minister Joseph Muscat on Monday.

The announcement was published in the government gazette on Wednesday. The casual election will be held on 14 October if candidates submit their nominations.

The Electoral Commission shall be receiving candidates’ nominations for a casual election to elect a member of parliament in the second electoral district.

Candidates who contested the second electoral district in the 2017 June snap election and were not elected are eligible to submit their nominations between 8 and 12 October at the Electoral Commission’s Office at Evans Building in Valletta between 9am and noon.

The Electoral Commission said that nomination forms may be obtained from the Office of the Electoral Commission in Valletta.

Muscat resigned from parliament on Monday following a 90-second speech. He had already stepped down as prime minister in January after his office became increasingly linked to the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Muscat always denied wrongdoing.
