Self-suspended minister Chris Cardona is in protection limbo as the Speaker has said that he cannot see how he can offer him any help. This development comes after Mr Speaker Dr Anglu Farrugia wrote to Cardona saying that, while he empathises with and shares his concerns, he cannot see how he can help Cardona get any protection.
Earlier, Cardona asked for protection from Mr Speaker in view of ‘allegations of frame-up’ on his person. Cardona said that as a representative of the people had been subjected to reports that a cabinet meeting had been briefed of an attempted ‘frame-up’ of Cardona in relation to the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Cardona said that while other matters reported about that cabinet meeting had been denied, this element had not been denied by the government.
“aside from any other legal consideration tied to calumny,” wrote Cardona, “ you appreciate that this is also an attack on my constitutional function to which I swore a solemn oath to serve loyally and faithfully the Republic of Malta,” wrote Cardona.
He said that any attempt which prejudices the functions of an MP requires strong and effective action including from the highest institution of the land – Parliament itself.
Mr Speaker said that the only protection that can legally be offered can happen only if the infringement happens in the Houses of Parliament
