Beats his girlfriend in front of police officers; granted bail

A 36-year-old man who attacked his girlfriend in front of police officers has been granted bail.

The man, a Cospicua resident, allegedly beat his girlfriend and then followed her to the police station when she attempted to file a report. Soon after, he struck her in the presence of the officers on duty.

He was charged with threatening and grievously injuring the woman, threatening and violently resisting arrest, refusing to obey the orders of six officers, as well as breaching the peace.

The defense stated that the prosecution had ignored the fact that the alleged victim had injured the alleged aggressor’s hand, and that she had swerved his steering wheel while he was driving in an attempt to cause an accident. These incidents are what started the fight.

The prosecution said that the drive from Naxxar to Cospicua, a fairly long drive, should have given him time to think about what he was about to do. Yet, he beat her in front of police officers.

The Court granted bail against a deposit of €6,000, a personal guarantee of €8,000, a curfew between 10pm and 6am and ordered him to sign the bail book daily.
