A Turkish professional gambler was granted bail following having been caught with €45,000 in undeclared cash at the Malta International Airport on Tuesday.

The amount of cash that one can travel with, without the need for any declarations, is that of €10,000. Anything over and above that would need to be declared with Customs.

Defence lawyers Gianluca Caruana Curran and Franco Debono said that the man’s final destination wasn’t Malta but it was Montecarlo. They also said that he is in fact a professional gambler. Magistrate Victor Axiaq upheld the request for bail against a deposit of €1,000 and a personal guarantee of €5,000.
