The first sitting of the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal on the extension plans of the American University of Malta in Cottonera has been postponed to October, after a potential conflict of interest was flagged.
The hearing which took place on Thursday, was deferred to 1 October after EPRT chairman declared that he was board secretary of the Planning Authority Board which refused the application.
Sadeen’s architect Edwin Mintoff asked to be able to consult with his client regarding whether the chairman should recuse himself.
The Planning Authority had unanimously rejected an application which would have seen two of the only open spaces in the area built up and the Senglea bastions obstructed from the view, resident group Azzjoni Tuna Artna Lura said in a statement.
The initial plans had included a third building also to be built on an open space at the foot of Fort Saint Michael.
Azzjoni Tuna Artna Lura which was formed to object the proposed development, held a symbolic action on Thursday in one of the public spaces to be impacted.
