Maltese artist, Gabriel Caruana, passed away at 89-years of age. Caruana is considered one of the pioneers of modern art in contemporary Europe.
Throughout his life, Caruana worked to build infrastructures for young Maltese artists. He also pushed forward contemporary art in out country to make it more accessible to the public.
One of his greatest contributions was when he founded the Mill Arts, Culture and Craft Centres (MACCC) in tal-Maħlut mill in Birkirkara. This was one of the first centres for modern and contemporary art in our country.
