Six Italians and a Maltese Birkirkara resident were arrested following vehicle inspections by the Police Anti-Drug Squad with the help of Enforcement Unit and the Customs Department.
Police sources have explained that 20 kilogrammes of what is suspected to be cannabis were found in a vehicle stopped near Birkirkara re-packed in 34 packages hidden in cars that had just arrived in malta with the catamaran service from Pozzallo, Sicily.
The seven individuals are being held at the Police HQ in Floriana to help in the ongoing investigations. Duty Magistrate Dr Micallef Stafrace ordered an inquest and has already assigned a number of experts to assist her.
Also on Friday another 23 kilogrammes were in Santa Lucia and Żebbuġ. On Sunday seven persons were arrested in Ġżira and Valletta during a raid.
