In an open letter sent to the President of Malta George Vella, Cassola explained that Chapter II Article 9 (1) and (2) of the Maltese Constitution “are extremely clear with regards to Maltese environment and to the defence of the quality of our land, air and waters.”

The independent politician added that Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and his government are breaching these two articles through their actions particularly when it comes to road building and issuing of building permits.

Cassola explained that the Constitution is saying that “The State shall protect and conserve the environment and its resources for the benefit of the present and future generations, and shall take measures to address any form of environmental degradation in Malta, including that of air, water and land, and any sort of pollution problem and to promote, nurture and support the right of action in favour of the environment.”

He is also explaining that the government led by Joseph Muscat is going against these articles on a daily basis by not safeguarding, protecting and conserving our environment and its resources for the benefit of future generations, but instead allowing for the degradation of our country’s eco-system.

On these grounds, Arnold Cassola is asking the President to take immediate action and stop the government from continuing to contravene the constitution.
