Restoration of Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu painting underway

The painting of the Ascension of Mary, known as Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu, dating back 400 years and found in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu in Gozo, is currently undergoing conservation and restoration.

The artwork was commissioned by Pinu Gauci and painted by Amadeo Perugino Bartolomeo in 1619.

Atelier del Restauro will be collaborating with Heritage Malta to study the original colors of the painting materials and techniques used by Perugino, while art historian Dr Sandro Debono will be carrying out extensive research of the history, iconography and artistic influences of the painting.

The public is being asked to help reimburse the costs of restoring the painting by sending a check addressed to the Rector, National Shrine of Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu, Triq Ta ‘Pinu, Gharb GRB 1704, Gozo. The names of the benefactors who contribute to this restoration will be recorded in a specially-published book.
