Another small riot at Ħal Safi

Police had responded to a small riot at the Ħal Safi detention centre.

A police spokesperson told Newsbook.com.mt that officers responded to the incident at 11.45AM. Nobody is reported to have been injured in the incident. The police say the situation is calm.

Earlier in the afternoon, riot police were called to the scene as residents reportedly threw items at the Detention Centre staff.

A number of migrants were arrested and put into a police van.

This is the latest in a number of riots which have erupted at the Ħal Safi detention centre. The residents have called for their freedom and proclaimed that they are not criminals.

The incident also comes just a week after unrest broke out at the Ħal Far open centre. Over 100 people were accused with being involved in the riot which resulted in the injuring of AWAS workers and police as well as the setting fire to vehicles and offices. Those who pled guilty were sentenced to 6 weeks in prison.
