Almost half a million in fines for parents not sending children to school

A total of €467,383.37 have been ordered to be handed out by parents and guardians for not sending their children to school across the last 3 scholastic years.

Answering to a Parliamentary question raised by PN MP Ivan Bartolo, Minister for Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri presented a document showing that just under half a million euros have been issues as fines for young students’ absence from school, covering the scholastic years between 2016 and 2019.

A total of 10,560 fines have been issued, resulting in an average fine of €44.45. 4,264 fines were issued in the scholastic year beginning 2016, with 4,198 and 2,098 fines issued in the following respective years.

Out of the total amount, €446,372.72 (95.5%) is yet to be paid. €13,594.26 has been paid, €125.82 are still pending judgement, and €7,290.57 have been judged (not due).
