The GWU is proposing that all accomodation for rental is registered with a Rent Authority, submitting details of the plot size and proof of certifications pertaining to health and safety, thus putting tenants’ minds at rest. The union is also proposing that rental properties are classified according to their size and facilities.
The General Workers Union is calling for a Rent Authority to be set up in order to provide incentives for landlords to rent out their properties and for tenants to be protected against abuse.
During an interview during Newshour on RTK, the GWU’s General Secretary Josef Bugeja stressed that regulations should be set out to safeguard the tenants’ rights without stiffling investment by tenants.
The Union’s General Secretary mentioned that around 34,000 foreign workers are in Malta at the moment, and if rental prices start exceeding their income, Malta will no longer be attractive to them.
