Alfred Sant, Member of the European Parliament, abstained from taking a vote on recreational fishing in the European Union.

Dr Sant said that he decided to abstain because, as yet, recreational fishing is not clearly defined.

Additionally, he explained that currently there are around 9 million recreational fishermen in the European Union, and before imposing regulatory framework, one has to take into account the socio-economic aspect of the sector.

The Nationalist Members of the European Parliament, who make part of the European People’s Party, voted in favour. From the socialist group, Miriam Dalli voted in favour, whereas Marlene Mizzi did not vote.
