A group of around 50 asylum seekers was rescued during a search and rescue operation by the Armed Forces of Malta on Thursday afternoon.

Questions sent to a government spokesperson on the case remain unanswered until the time of publishing.

The group of people was disembarked in the Armed Forces naval base in Haywharf in Floriana.

Migrant hotline Alarm Phone said that a boat carrying 28 people including a woman and a baby which had left from Zuwarah in Libya sent a distress call during the night. The boat was assisted by the Italian coastguard since it was 38nm off the coast of Lampedusa.

Further details will follow.
