Woman drowns in Marsascala

A 70-year-old woman has lost her life after finding herself in difficulty whilst swimming in Marsascala on Tuesday morning.

The tragic incident happened close to the Fajtata area, beneath the low cliffs on the northern edge of St Thomas Bay.

A police spokesman told Newsbook.com.mt that around 10:30am, onlookers called for assistance, mistakently reporting that two swimmers had found themselves in difficulty.

An Armed Forces of Malta helicopter was deployed to help in the rescue, while police officers, Civil Protection Department officials and Malta Red Cross first aiders went on site.

However, efforts to revive the woman proved unsuccessful, and she was declared dead on site.
