AD, PD insist on clarity over Melvin Theuma incident

Forensic investigators are seen near the home of Melvin Theuma, who had been granted a presidential pardon to testify against the alleged mastermind behind the assassination of anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, after he was found unconscious following what police called a suicide attempt, in Swieqi, Malta July 22, 2020. Alternattiva Demokratika and Partit Demokratiku insisted that clarity was required on the circumstances leading to the hospitalisation of state witness Melvin Theuma, who sustained injuries believed to be self-inflicted by the police.

The two political parties – who are discussing a possible merger – said that the hospitalisation of Theuma with injuries to the neck and chest in spite of 24-hour police protection was highly disturbing, and called on the police to establish the full facts as quickly as possible and to identify the circumstances that allowed such an incident to happen.

AD and PD also reiterated their call that the police needed the support of international investigative authorities, including a Joint Investigative Team with Europol and the continued involvement of the FBI.

“The cases related to the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia are a fundamental test for our democracy – a test we simply cannot afford to fail,” the two parties said.
