The trailer for the highly-anticipated live-action remake of Dumbo dropped yesterday. The film tells the tale of Dumbo, the baby circus elephant with enormous ears who can fly.

Produced by Disney and directed by the prolific Tim Burton, the film boasts a star-studded cast which includes Danny de Vito, Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Eva Green… and Joseph Gatt – an actor who, as his surname suggests, has Maltese parentage.

Joseph Gatt

According to, born and raised in London, Gatt first got the acting bug when his Maltese parents took him to see Star Wars at the age of eight and he decided to be Han Solo when he was older.

Gatt, who has a condition called ‘alopecia universalis’ which made all of his hair fall out at the age of 14, trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School and the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. After graduating, he found work in the West End, starring in productions including Miss Saigon and Jesus Christ Superstar. After moving to the U.S., he got a lead role in the thriller feature Pulse opposite Kristen Bell.

Notable roles on the big and small screen include Frost Giant Grundroth in Marvel’s Thor, as well as parts in Star Trek: into Darkness, Stan Lee’s Lucky Man and Game of Thrones. He currently resides in Los Angeles.

Gatt is very well featured not only on the Dumbo poster (he is to the left of actor Colin Farell) but also in the trailer; he is the man who at 1:36″ says: “He doesn’t look like magic to me.”

(By the way, we suggest you grab a box of tissues before you watch the trailer… tears are guaranteed especially if you belong to the generation who watched the original version.)

Tim Burton and Disney’s live-action remake of Dumbo is due for release on the 29th March 2019.
