Active cases shoot up to over 1000 after 112 new coronavirus cases detected

112 new coronavirus cases were reported by the health authorities on Thursday, after 2,481 swab tests, as the number of active cases continues to surge and now stands at 1009.

On Wednesday, the highest daily tally was recorded when 111 cases were reported. This was surpassed on Thursday.

A 59-year-old man became the latest coronavirus victim on Wednesday and to date the pandemic has claimed 45 lives.

A total of 42 have been declared to have made a recovery.

The latest cases are still being investigated by the health authorities. Meanwhile from the 111 cases reported on Wednesday, the health authorities have traced 38 cases as follows: 28 were individuals who are family members of previously known cases, two individuals were contacts of positive work colleagues, while two belonged to the Paceville cluster. There were also five direct contacts of other known positive cases and a case which was imported.

74 cases remain unaccounted for.

To date, Malta has registered 4,160 coronavirus cases out of which 3,106 have made a recovery. A total of 289,594 swab tests have been carried out.
