A man who allegedly panicked after being involved in a road accident pleaded not guilty before the Courts on Tuesday. He also rebuffed the accusations of attacking Deputy Police Commissioner Alexander Gatt and another police officer.
The accused, who was allegedly driving riding a motorcycle without insurance and under the influence, is a 31-year-old Nigerian residing in Birżebbuġa. He was arraigned before Magistrate Nadine Lia.
Lawyer Gianluca Caruana Curran said that when the police officers approached the accused, he panicked and was suffering from injuries to his ribs following a road accident. He added that the accused should be released as the witnesses to the incident are all members of the police force and therefore the accused would not be able to tamper with the evidence.
Inspector Roderick Attard objected to his release from arrest and insisted that the man was also in breach of his conditional release from a previous case, which provides sufficient evidence that he (the accused) cannot be trusted.
The magistrate released the man from arrest against a deposit of €1,000 and a personal guarantee of €10,000. A curfew has also been imposed and the man also needs to sign the register at his local police station.
