Civil society NGO Repubblika insisted that Prime Minister Robert Abela could not emulate Pontius Pilate and wash his hands in the wake of the shocking allegations which emerged during the compilation of evidence against Yorgen Fenech earlier in the day.
Among other matters, Inspector Kurt Zahra recounted that during the interrogation, Fenech claimed that Muscat’s chief of staff Keith Schembri was actively involved in the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia. He also claimed that Muscat was one of three people who were informed of Schembri’s involvement after the assassination took place.
Repubblika emphasised that Abela was not just Prime Minister, but also the leader of the Labour Party and of the Labour parliamentary group which included Muscat.
“But it appears that Robert Abela cannot expel Joseph Muscat, even though Chris Cardona and Konrad Mizzi no longer form part of the Labour parliamentary group,” it observed.
The NGO also expressed concern that certain elements within the country’s institutions appeared to be protecting Muscat and Schembri.
“Can we rest assured that no evidence is being allowed to disappear? Even here, Dr Robert Abela needs to assume his responsibilities as Prime Minister,” it concluded.
