88% of suicide cases in Malta are male. H.E. The President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca encouraged men and boys not to be afraid of speaking out and seeking help in the case of mental health struggles.
In her speech on World Mental Health Day, the President appealed for all to work together to overcome these hurdles. She also praised NGOs working in the field, mentioning how the World Health Organisation has reported an 18% increase in depression every decade, and that one in four people are suffering from some form of mental illness.
This was all said at the inauguration of the exhibition My journey…painting myself out of depression organised by the Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre in Bormla, held at San Anton Palace. The exhibition focuses on the rough road through recovery via personal accounts by the artist, Liene Zalkalne.
The President concluded her speech by saying that nobody is “better” than anybody else. The only difference is between people who can work on themselves and, through their work, be happier and help others in the process, “just as Liene is doing with this beautiful exhibition.”
