The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) has saved around 80 people who were stranded on a dinghy. They are expected to arrive in Malta in the coming few hours. A spokesperson for the Armed Forces of Malta confirmed this and said that a statement will be released soon.

Earlier in the day, 57 people were saved and taken to Lampedusa.

An aeroplane saw the dinghy about 47 miles southeast of Lampedusa, within Malta’s search and rescue area. An Italian journal ‘La Repubblica’ reported that the dinghy was being helped by a merchandise ship called Saint Peter, which held a Bahamas flag. AFM patrol boats have been deployed and have started their search and rescue operations.
