8 medical associations are requesting a complete lockdown on all travel with immediate effect in order to contain the local spread of COVID-19.

In a joint press statement, the medical association stated that now COVID-19 is being transmitted in populations all across Europe and therefore strongly recommend the immediate cessation of flights from European countries where COVID-19 cases are increasing rapidly including The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, and the United Kingdom.

The medical associations said that in Malta we already have health care workers returning from countries where mandatory quarantine is not yet recommended and that each and every case will have a serious ripple effect on the health care system, as each confirmed case will force other health care workers to enter mandatory quarantine, said the associations.

The 8th medical associations are:

Maltese Association of Radiologists and Nuclear Medicine Physicians (MARNMP), Association of Anaesthetists of Malta (AAM), Association of Emergency Physicians of Malta (AEPM), Association of Surgeons of Malta (ASM), Association of Private Family Doctors, Malta College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MCOG), Malta Association of Ophthalmologists (MAO) and the Maltese Paediatric Association (MPA)
