Updated: Second group of asylum seekers to be disembarked at Haywharf

A second group of asylum seekers numbering 89 people, are set to be disembarked at Haywharf this evening. One female is said to be among them.

A spokesperson for the Armed Forces of Malta informed Newsbook.com.mt that those rescued will be brought to the AFM naval base by patrol vessel and are estimated to be disembarked at around 19.10PM.

Those are understood to have been picked up from a rubber boat within the Maltese Search and Rescue Zone.

This is the second rescue from the Maltese SAR zone by AFM today. A previous rescue and disembarkation of 73 migrants, took place earlier today.

73 asylum seekers rescued by AFM disembark at Haywharf

73 asylum seekers were brought to Haywharf naval base on Monday afternoon after they were rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta.

The migrants who were on a rubber boat were rescued in Maltese search and rescue waters by a patrol vessel of the Armed Forces of Malta after they were spotted during a routine search.

On Friday night, 356 asylum seekers that were rescued by the Norwegian-flagged charity ship were brought to Malta after they were transferred from the Ocean Viking to an AFM patrol boat.

A spokesperson for the Armed Forces of Malta said that the group consists of only men.

A second group of migrants is expected to be brought to Malta.

In a statement the AFM said that it coordinated and conducted two separate rescue operations in Malta’s Search and Rescue Region. The second group will be transferred to an AFM patrol boat.
