Seven asylum seekers including minors have been remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to being involved in a protest at the Marsa detention centre on Tuesday.

A group of around 40 asylum seekers revolted on Tuesday.

The seven individuals aged between 16 and 29 pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them. Six of the accused are from Sudan while one is from Somalia.

Police Inspector Paul Camilleri told the court that the accused were identified by security officers as having been the ones who first scaled an internal gate at the centre, before encouraging others to join them. The asylum seekers demanded their immediate release from detention during the protests.

The seven individuals were identified as “ringleaders”.

The court turned down a request for bail.

Legal aid lawyer Martin Fenech appeared for the accused.
