The number of visually impaired children currently in primary and secondary schools around Malta and Gozo stands at 67.

The President of Malta was addressing a conference organised by Carers of Children with Visual Impairment which is part of The Association to Assist Visually Impaired Persons in collaboration with the Assistive Devices for Visually Impaired Centre.

Coleiro Preca said that due to the specific challenges these children have to face throughout their education, they should receive all the help that they may need in this process.

Furthermore, she insisted that in the context of an inclusive educational system an effective strategy is needed in order to address the challenges faced by children.
During her speech she referred to the Reading Marathon, where these 67 children will be given special kits in order to help them in their education. The Reading Marathon, Qaritona, was launched by The President’s Trust and the National Literacy Agency.
