65 new cases of Covid-19 reported

The number of active cases of Covid-19 has crept up to 455 overnight, with the health authorities reporting 65 new cases and 43 new recoveries.

The new cases were identified through the 2,108 swab tests carried out over 24 hours: a total of 260,917 swab tests have been carried out in Malta so  far.

Malta has reported 3,204 cases of Covid-19 to date, with 2,711 making a recovery.

The pandemic has claimed 38 lives in Malta, most in recent weeks: according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Malta has been reporting the highest Covid-19 mortality rate in Europe in recent days.

Most of yesterday’s cases sporadic

Today’s cases are still being investigated, but the health authorities have confirmed the origin of 21 of yesterday’s cases.

10 were family members 2 were direct contacts and 7 were colleagues of previously-known positive cases. An additional two cases were imported.

44 new cases of Covid-19 had been reported on Friday, leaving 23 – just over half – which are being treated as sporadic.
