Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said that the 62 people in Maltese waters are clearly an example of human trafficking.
On Facebook, Salvini said that these people are aboard 7 speedboats, and are not in any danger. He said that Italy has contacted the Maltese authorities to do their job, and that Italy will not allow these immigrants to disembark on its land.
The Government of Malta responded by saying that there are a number of boats currently crossing the Mediterranean, and it concluded that this is not a case where they need assistance. The Government of Malta went on to say that it is illegal to intercept boats travelling across international waters.
