57 elderly people at four different residential care homes have contracted coronavirus.
In a statement on Sunday, the Social Solidarity Ministry that the four care homes are Simblija, Casa Antonia, Casa San Paolo and St Joseph Residence.
The health authorities reported that at total of 32 coronavirus cases consisting of staff and residents were detected from St Joseph Residence in Fgura alone.
The Social Solidarity Ministry explained that where coronavirus cases have been reported the health authorities have carried out swab tests on both residents and staff. The residential care homes are also using staff-to-patient allocation and creating safe bubbles on each storey as well as taking other measures aimed at controlling the infection.
Residents who test negative are being tested again every three days as the health authorities continue to monitor the situation.
The ministry ensured that the relatives of the patients are being kept updated about the situation.
The authorities are committed to continue safeguarding the health and safety of all residents. The number of swab tests carried out on a daily basis are expected to increase while infection control experts will continue to monitor the affected care homes closely while providing care to the patients.
The Medical Association of Malta has issued new directives affecting doctors working in primary health care ordering them to refrain from carrying out work related to coronavirus in privately owned residential care homes until a public health emergency is declared.
