Social Solidarity Minister Michael Falzon, said the number of single mothers receiving the
Social Assistance for Single Parents amounts to 2,464 while those who are
separated/divorced amount to 3,082. Unemployment benefit is also the main source of
income of 223 persons.
According to figures given in Parliament, the majority of separated/divorced persons living
on social assistance come from Birkirkara (211), San Pawl il-Bahar (202), Hamrun (154),
Qormi (152) and Bormla (146). Salina has no one registered as receiving social benefits.
San Pawl il-Bahar ranks first in receiving unemployment benefits followed by Bormla and
Valletta. Birkirkara beats Bormla on assistance to Single Mothers (158 to 154) while Fontana brings up the rear with no such benefits being required.
