A new agreement signed between the Ministry for Gozo and Villa San Lawrenz will see 52 new beds bought by the government at the private care home for elderly people.
The signing was announced in a statement on Thursday by the Ministry for Gozo, describing the event as further investment in services for the elderly on the sister island.
Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana said that this agreement will increase the services available for the elderly in Gozo. The Minister explained that this was part of an electoral promise by Partit Laburista which had pledged 500 beds in residential care homes for elderly people in Gozo.
The Government has already signed an agreement with Casa Amalia, a care home specializing in caring for residents who suffer from dementia while a night shelter was opened in Xagħra.
Minister Caruana said that the Ministry is preparing to open more residential care homes to provide services for the Gozitan elderly. One out of every three persons living on Gozo is an elderly person.
