5,000 migrants in 8 months stopped from attempting to flee Libya – Bartolo

Foreign Affairs Minister Evarist Bartolo said that around 5,000 migrants were stopped from leaving Libya to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe. While addressing a press conference related to the budgetary measures for next year, Minister Bartolo said that this was possible due to Malta’s strengthening relationship with Libya during the past months.

Minister Evarist Bartolo also announced that Malta will continue to strengthen its presence in various African and Latin American countries by establishing embassies. The aim is to create stronger political and commercial ties in the two continents.

Regarding the issue of illegal migration Bartolo stated that Malta will maintain a firm stand inorder for all countries members of the European Union to share the burden of illegal migration for those migrants who have the right to seek asylum while does who do not will be repatriated to their country.

During the press conference, the Minister also referred to the earthquake that has hit Turkey and Greece and said that the Ministry has made contact with the Maltese who live in the affected regions.
