The final preparations are currently underway in order to add the last 44 beds at the Intensive Care Unit at Mater Dei Hospital, Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne announced on in a Twitter Post.
This means that the total number of beds went from 20 up to a total of 125 beds.
This is being done as part of Malta’s preparations for the coronavirus outbreak.
Fearne has reiterated his call for people to stay home and to practice social distancing in order to curb the spread of the virus.
On Saturday morning, Superintendent of Public Health Professor Charmaine Gauci announced four new coronavirus cases which were detected in the last 24 hours. Another eight patients have successfully recovered from the virus bringing the number up to 99.
Two patients remain in intensive care with one of the patients still breathing with the help of a ventilator.
