40 new Covid-19 infections; death toll at 157

Malta registered 40 new coronavirus cases overnight following 1,776 swab tests. This means that 99 less cases from the previous day. However, 1,416 less swab tests were carried out in the previous 24 hours.

The death toll stands at 157 the health authorities announced in an infographic showing it had gone up by two from the previous day. Details about the victims were published separately in a statement.

A 77-year-old man who tested positive on 4 December, died on Monday while an 89-year-old woman who tested positive on 7 December died the following day. Both victims passed away at Mater Dei Hospital.

On Monday, the health authorities reported four coronavirus-related deaths.

144 individuals have made a recovery as the number of active cases now stands at 1,901.

From the 139 cases reported on Monday, the health authorities have so far traced 46, with the rest remaining unaccounted for.

  • 18 family members of individuals who tested positive;
  • 17 work colleagues of individuals who tested positive;
  • 11 direct contacts of individuals who tested positive.
