31 Maltese and Gozitan Catholic groups and organisations are appealing to the government to save the migrants who are at risk to drown at sea because no country is accepting to assist them.
In a joint statement, the Catholic groups and organisations said they are shocked at the decision taken by the Government to deny support to migrants in distress because of the government’s decision to close Maltese ports due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“These are not the values that guided our nation and made us who we are. As Christians we need to be reminded that Jesus is on those boats,” said the 31 Catholic groups and organisations.
They said that while they acknowledge the concern of many with the limitation of our nation’s size and the risks associated with an uncontrolled influx of migrants, our country cannot allow these concerns to be a justification for leaving the migrants in hardship even more so when these fall within the search and rescue responsibilities of Malta.
They also said that they cannot believe that some of these migrants have been found dead, others are missing or have been returned to the unacceptable detention conditions in Libya.
They have also appealed to the EU and the member states to be more forthcoming in this humanitarian crisis and not offer to share the burden only after a member state demands aid.
