3% of Maltese mothers are under 20 years old

3.2% of women who become mothers in 2017 were under 20 years old.  This amounts to 138 mothers.

This statistic was issued by the National Statistics Office to celebrate World Population Day.

The total number of births fell by 3.5% in 2017 compared with 2016, and the majority of mothers fell under the 25 to 34 years age bracket.

Malta has more people aged over 65 years than people aged under 18 years. Statistics show that people under 18 years old consist of 16.6% of the Maltese population. On the other hand, 18.8% are aged 65 years or over.

The death toll in the country increased by 6.9% in 2017. Out of the 3,571 registered deaths in 2017, 63.3% were people over 75 years of age.

The total population in Malta until the end of 2017 was of 475,701. It increased by 3.3% when compared with 2016.
