22 Deaf Gozo students complete course in Maltese sign language

Twenty-two students have successfully completed a course in Maltese sign language in Gozo. The course was organized by the Gozo Association for the Deaf (GAD).

During the graduation, Minister for Gozo, Justyne Caruana said that the Maltese government was placing great emphasis on supporting deaf people, adding that they had recognized sign language as an official language and set up a dedicated council to support this. Caruana reminded the audience that Agenzija Support offers the service of sign language interpreters.

The Minister explained that the Ministry had provided funds to help support the Maltese sign language course and other initiatives carried out by GAD.

During the ceremony, the Minister announced an agreement with the Gozo Diocese for the installation of an induction loop system. She added that this will be extended to public spaces and buildings.

The Minister thanked GAD for their great work in the Gozitan society supporting deaf people. She reaffirmed that the Ministry for Gozo is always ready to help and assist when and where needed, to accommodate the deaf and hard of hearing in Gozo.
