Two police officers who were serving as security detail with the Prime Minister were transferred back to the police traffic branch. The two individuals are also under police investigation, the police said in a statement on Tuesday.
The two officers are being investigated in connection to widespread abuse alleged by a whistleblower.
Prime Minister Robert Abela said that as soon as he was made aware of the alleged wrongdoing, he took action and had them removed. He highlighted that the officers were not chosen by him, but that he had inherited them from former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
The information came to light this afternoon after an anonymous email, presumably sent by the whistleblower, was received by several media houses and MPs, including Prime Minister Robert Abela. Opposition MP Jason Azzopardi who was one of the recipients published the email on Facebook.
In the email, the person claimed that upon removal, the two officers were informed of the widespread investigation taking place which prompted them to raise the alarm. The person added that efforts were underway by some individuals within the police force to try and identify the whistleblower.
Prime Minister Abela when asked whether he was aware of such efforts, and replied in the negative. He added that if he finds out that such efforts were made he will take action.
