135 victims of domestic violence have been provided legal aid so far through a service launched by the government last April, figures published in Parliament show.
Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis was replying to a parliamentary question by PN MP Claudette Buttigieg on the service launched by the Legal Aid Malta Agency on 26 April. The agency employs three lawyers who are specifically tasked with assisting victims or alleged victims of domestic violence.
Three people had made use of the service by the end of April, followed by 22 in May, 41 in June, 32 in July, 14 in August and 18 in September. A further 5 benefited from legal aid by 2 October
