Il-Jum Dinji taż-Żgħażagħ: Festa ta’ Fidi

L-esperjenza tal-Jum Dinji taż-Żgħażagħ hija dejjem esperjenza straordinarja ta’ fidi.

Mijiex proposta ta’ vokazzjoni reliġjuża jew saċerdotali imma proposta li kull Nisrani ikun missjunarju. Ovvjament, hija ħaġa sabiħa li tinnota u tara li waqt l-Jum Dinji taż-Żgħażagħ jiġu mmaturati ħafna vokazzjonijiet għas-saċerdozju, għall-ħajja reliġjuża u anke għaż-żwieġ, u din hija barka speċjali mill-Mulej li din il-festa ta’ fidi tqanqal lill-qlub taż-żgħażagħ biex jiskopru t-triq li twassalhom għall-Qdusija, ir-rieda ta’ Alla f’ħajjithom.

    English Translation:

World Youth Day – A celebration of faith

The occasion of World Youth Day is always an extraordinary experience of faith. Lived faith, celebrated faith, within the context of a large family.  It is such a sight to see thousands and thousands of young people, gathered together around His Holiness the Pope.  It is a joyful spectacle which triggers off several questions:  why do so many personalities, who are often more advanced in age, leave such an impression upon Catholic youth? Why do the words of the Pope have such a profound effect upon these youngsters?

Worldly criteria does not help us to understand the extraordinary phenomenon of World Youth Day.  I am fortunate enough to be part of this experience in Rio de Janeiro.  On accessing the website of the World Youth Day of Rio de Janeiro  – www.rio2013.com/en –  one immediately realizes how immense are the efforts and the level of solidarity that are required in order to organize an influential event such as World Youth Day.

The Maltese contingent, which is composed of youths, chose to take up a voluntary work programme before celebrating their faith.  I hold in high esteem the choice which they made – a choice to live their faith concretely as they go about celebrating it.  I shall be one of the catechist Bishops during World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro and for this reason, I am presently visiting our missionaries in Brazil.  Years ago, they too made a determined choice to leave our beautiful island and offer their lives for service on a much larger continent, where the language and environment are so different, and where the seasons are the reverse of what we experience in country: when it’s summer in Malta, it’s winter in Brazil.

During these days, the preparatory catechesis for youths is centered around hope and the missionary vocation.  As we place our hope in Jesus Christ, we also find the strength to entrust our lives to Him.  It is He who gives us the force to pass on to others this strength and this trust in Him which is kindled inside our hearts.   This is not an invitation to religious life or to the priesthood but an invitation for every Christian to be a missionary.  Obviously, it is positive to note that during World Youth Day, many youth are inspired to respond to a call to the priesthood, to religious life and even to married life.  It is indeed a special grace bestowed by God during the time of this celebration of faith which makes it possible for young people to open up their hearts to discover the path which leads them to holiness, to the will of God in their lives.
