Charlene Mercieca, known to her friends as ‘the soap lady’, told Newsbook.com.mt that her favourite animals are lionesses, described by her as ‘fierce yet soft. Charlene is one of the trio that host 103’s breakfast show, Monday to Friday, from 6.00a.m. until 10.00a.m.
She joined 103 because “of its feel good music and great team.”
Charlene’s full answers to Newsbook.com.mt’s questions follow.
Newsbook.com.mt: If you had to change your name (and surname) what would you change it to?
Charlene: For the last decade I always told friends that if I had a daughter I would have called her Nina. So I guess that would the name I would choose. I would change my surname to ‘Savon’ which means ‘soap’ in French. I like its sound. But mainly because everybody knows me as ‘the soap lady’. But even though I had to change my name I would still be ‘me’
Newsbook.com.mt: Which is your favourite animal?
Charlene: Definitely a lioness. In a world where lions are seen as kings, the lioness is the one that goes to hunt. She is fierce yet soft when she needs too.
Newsbook.com.mt: What’s your favourite colour?
Charlene: Duck egg blue. Oh yes, I am very particular when in comes to colour.
Newsbook.com.mt: What famous quote has inspired you?
Charlene: There are actually two quotes which I live by. The first is by Paulo Coelho
“When you want something, the universe conspires in helping you achieving it.”
The second quote is from the famous burlesque dancer Dita Vonn Teese who said “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach, but there will always be somebody who hates peaches”.
Both quotes are a reminder to never give up on my dreams and to always be myself even though there might be those who do not like what I am or what I want to achieve.
Newsbook.com.mt: Who of the recent popes most influenced your life?
Charlene: I would probably say Pope St. John Paul II. He is the image that comes to my mind when someone mentions the word pope. For me he is the image of kindness, composure and wisdom.
Newsbook.com.mt: What is your greatest fear?
Charlene: To die with regrets
Newsbook.com.mt: What song irritates you most?
Charlene: Any ‘song’ which is made out of people screaming, ‘music’ that sounds more like a battle from Star Wars or just sounds thrown in together. I don’t have a name for such tracks as I deem them a waste of memory.
Otherwise I tend to enjoy most music from Rnb to Classical and hill songs; depending on my mood.
Newsbook.com.mt: Name one object you can’t live without.
Charlene: Is food considered an object? That is the only thing I would not live without. Otherwise I don’t really get attached to anything. I live a very minimalistic life.
Newsbook.com.mt: What would you choose: a career you love or a big sum of money?
Charlene: I already have a career I love and I’m very grateful to be able to wake up every day and work in my career. So I would choose a big some of money to be able to invest in various projects including those related to the upkeep of the environment and the welfare animals.
Newsbook.com.mt: Why 103?
Charlene: For various reasons, but mainly because of its feel good music and great team.
